ARTZ is 2012 Recipient of Fundraiser from SKAL Club at The Colonnade Hotel
Boston, MA - ARTZ was an honored guest at the 2012 SKAL Club's annual luncheon and fundraiser, which was generously hosted by Boston's famed Colonnade Hotel on Thursday, December 20th. The SKAL Club is an international association of travel and tourism. To learn more about their great work please visit: www.skalboston.com. Every year SKAL hosts a fund raiser for a local non-profit and ARTZ is so pleased to receive said honor this year. The luncheon, including a silent and live auction, raised several thousand dollars for ARTZ programming! Check back for news about the total donation amount! ARTZ thanks everyone who made a donation at the luncheon! We salute the great work of SKAL, which has raised over $300,000 for charities through its annual fundraising campaign. Special thanks to David Colella, Director of the Colonnade, and his wife, artist Nancy Colella, for their enthusiastic support and commitment to improving the quality of life for people affected by Alzheimer's and related dementia. |

Marian Brown Joins ARTZ as Associate Director We are delighted to announce that Marian Brown has joined our team as Associate Director. Ms. Brown is an arts educator and professional studio artist. She graduated from Harvard's Graduate School of Education (HGSE) this May with a degree in Arts in Education. Prior to coming to HGSE and Boston, she completed artist residencies at The Colorado Center for Handmade Paper and The Genesee Center for Arts and Education. Marian's work is currently showing at Harvard's Gutman Library and will also be showing at VSA Massachusetts Open Door Gallery later this summer. As a passionate arts-educator and inclusive practices advocate, Marian describes ARTZ as a "natural fit". Given the great alignment in vision, and the commitment to quality arts experiences, we have no doubt that she will be a great asset to our team. "My father knows all the actors and names them the way he used to when he was younger," says Marquis, 61. "We are laughing together. ARTZ Summer Internship Program ARTZ is delighted to introduce 2011 Summer Intern Melody Bushmich from Endicott College. According to Melody, "At my internship at ARTZ I hope to gain a deeper understanding of dementia while also further exploring the development of therapeutic arts programming that improves quality of life. Aspiring to have a career within the field of Senior Community Management, I hope to acquire the skills needed for planning and executing successful, meaningful events and programs like ARTZ has done."

I Remember Better When I Paint, part of the 2011 Film & the Arts Series, is the first international documentary about the positive impact of art and other creative therapies on people with Alzheimer’s. This groundbreaking documentary by Eric Ellena and Berna Huebner is presented by French Connection Films and the Hilgos Foundation and narrated by legendary Academy Award-winning actress Olivia de Haviland. ARTZ United Kingdom Kick-OffFirst Annual ARTZ sponsored Arts & Dementia Conferene in Oxford ARTZ is pleased to unveil its new chapter in the United Kingdom. ARTZ UK will be directed by Maria Parsons, a renowned dementia specialist and research analyst. Visit the ARTZ UK website to learn about the upcoming Arts and Dementia Conference at St. Hilda's College in Oxford on June 22nd. The ARTZ UK programmes include: Establishing a network of amateur and professional artists who volunteer for 1 hour per year to work with or perform for people with dementia in care homes or in day settings in the community; Providing guided tours in museums and art galleries using specially trained staff and volunteers to create successful visits with people with dementia engaging their interest and creating memories; Developing programmes in local cultural institutions that support access and welcome people with dementia;Building a network of cultural institutions, including sports clubs, cafés, cinemas and theatres in every locality in order to offer a weekly programme of events for people with dementia and carers. "I'm Still Here" Exhibit Opens in San Francisco Themes of identity and self-expression aimed at educating scientific community March 25, 2011 The paintings, poems, and photographs have been installed for the current ARTZ "I'm Still Here: Alzheimer's and Creative Expression" exhibition in San Francisco, CA. Seven artists living with dementia participated in this project. The goal of this exhibit is to educate scientists and biotech organizations about the inner spirit and immense creative capacities of people diagnosed with dementia.
